Best Oscillating Multi-Tool 2026: 5 Models Compared

An oscillating multi-tool cuts flush against a floor, plunges into drywall and trims a door jamb in place. No other saw does those jobs. The five here cost from $110 to $302, and the gap is mostly speed of cut and vibration.

Quick answer

The DEWALT DCS356B is the multi-tool to buy if you own 20V MAX batteries: brushless, three speed ranges up to 20,000 OPM, and a Quick-Change clamp that swaps blades in seconds, for about $199 bare. With no batteries at all, SKIL's OS5920B-10 kit at $109.99 or the corded Dremel MM50-02 at $129.99 costs far less to start. Milwaukee's 2836-20 cuts fastest with a 4.2-degree angle at $302, and Makita's XMT03Z is a lower-priced bare tool for LXT owners.

📋

We did not run our own testing on these multi-tools. A fair comparison needs timed plunge cuts in matched oak and nail-embedded pine plus a vibration meter, and we have neither. What we did instead: took speed range, oscillation angle, motor type, weight and kit contents from each manufacturer's product page, checked US prices on October 4, 2026, and read owner reviews in volume. We kept only specific complaints that repeat, such as blade clamps that loosen, tools that overheat on long sanding jobs and batteries too small for the work.

★ Best Pick

🏆 Best overall: The DCS356B is brushless, with a three-position speed selector and a variable trigger reaching 20,000 OPM. The Quick-Change lever swaps blades without a wrench, and there is an LED.

3⚡ Fastest cuttingMilwaukee M18 FUEL Oscillating Multi-Tool (2836-20, Tool Only)

Milwaukee M18 FUEL Oscillating Multi-Tool (2836-20, Tool Only)

The -20 suffix is the bare tool. Battery and charger are sold separately.

The 2836-20 pairs a brushless motor running 10,000 to 20,000 OPM with a 4.2-degree oscillation angle, the widest stated here. Milwaukee claims the fastest cuts and lowest full-tool vibration in its class, and fits a 180-degree LED. At $301.97 without a battery it costs nearly three times the SKIL kit. That is hard to justify for occasional household repairs.

Pros

  • ✓4.2-degree oscillation angle
  • ✓Brushless, 10,000-20,000 OPM
  • ✓180-degree LED

Cons

  • ✗$301.97 before battery

What this tool is for, and what it is not

The blade swings a few degrees side to side, thousands of times a minute. That lets it cut straight into a surface and flush against another one. Typical jobs: undercutting door casing for new flooring, cutting an outlet hole in drywall, removing grout, scraping old adhesive and sanding into corners.

It is slow at everything a dedicated saw does. Cutting a 2x4 to length takes far longer than with a circular saw, and blades wear quickly in nails and hardwood. Think of it as the tool for the cut nothing else can reach.

Oscillation angle, speed and price

Two numbers drive cutting speed. OPM is how often the blade swings. Oscillation angle is how far. A wider angle removes more wood per swing and also shakes the tool more.

The table shows each maker's figures and the price we saw on October 4, 2026.

ModelSpeed (OPM)AnglePrice seen
DEWALT DCS356BUp to 20,000Not stated$199.08, tool only
Dremel MM50-0210,000-21,000Not stated$129.99, corded kit
Milwaukee 2836-2010,000-20,0004.2°$301.97, tool only
Makita XMT03Z6,000-20,0003.2°$169, tool only
SKIL OS5920B-10Not stated3.6°$109.99, battery kit

The Makita's low end of 6,000 OPM is useful for scraping and for plastics that melt at speed. The Milwaukee's 4.2 degrees is the widest stated angle, which is why it is positioned as the fastest cutter.

Blade changes, vibration and battery drain

You will change accessories often, from a wood blade to a scraper to a sanding pad. All five have tool-free clamps. DEWALT's Quick-Change lever is the quickest to use. Dremel's system needs a twist and a push of a knob. Makita's lever releases a pin and uses the OIS pattern, so most universal-fit blades work.

Vibration is the main comfort issue, because both hands stay on the tool for minutes at a time. Milwaukee claims the lowest full-tool vibration in its class. SKIL states 80 percent less vibration than its own models without the feature. Neither claim is comparable across brands.

Cordless multi-tools drain batteries quickly. Makita states up to 20 minutes of continuous run time for the XMT03Z, which has a brushed motor. Sanding a whole door frame may need a second battery or a corded tool.

How these picks were chosen

We chose tools from brands widely sold online in the US and included one corded model, since a multi-tool is often a once-a-month tool that does not justify a battery platform. Blade costs add up, so check that the tool accepts universal-fit accessories before buying brand-only blades.

Frequently asked questions

Do blades from one brand fit another?▼
Often, yes. Most blades sold as universal fit work on DEWALT, Makita, SKIL and Dremel clamps. Starlock blades fit only Starlock tools. Check the blade packaging for your brand before buying a multi-pack.
Can a multi-tool cut metal?▼
Yes, with a bi-metal or carbide blade. It handles nails, screws, copper pipe and thin sheet metal. Use a lower speed, and expect the blade to wear faster than in wood.
Is corded or cordless better for this tool?▼
Cordless is more convenient for quick cuts in awkward places. Corded is better for long scraping and sanding sessions, since it never stops to recharge and usually costs less.
Why do my blades dull so fast?▼
Heat. Pushing hard at full speed burns the teeth, especially in hardwood. Let the blade do the work, rock it slightly to clear dust, and use carbide blades for nails and hard materials.
Can it replace a detail sander?▼
For small areas and corners, yes, with the triangular sanding pad. For flat surfaces larger than a hand, a random orbital sander is faster and leaves a more even finish.
Is a brushless motor worth it here?▼
On cordless models, yes. DEWALT states up to 57 percent more run time for its brushless tool over brushed ones, and run time is the weak point of cordless multi-tools.
How do I undercut a door jamb for flooring?▼
Lay a scrap of the new flooring on the subfloor as a height guide, rest a flush-cut wood blade flat on it and plunge into the casing. The offcut slides out and the flooring slips underneath.
