All-in-one vs. component kits in 2026
All-in-one kits hide the filter in the back compartment (Fluval Flex/Spec, Marineland Portrait). Cleaner look, better for desks. Component kits (Aqueon, Tetra) have visible hang-on-back filters — uglier but easier to service.
LED quality varies widely. Fluval's app-controlled LEDs are the best — programmable spectrum, sunrise/sunset cycle. Marineland's adjustable LED is solid. Aqueon and Tetra LEDs are functional but lack programmability.
Test results
Filter noise at 1 m: Fluval Spec V (32 db, quietest), Fluval Flex 15 (35 db), Marineland Portrait (38 db), Tetra 20G (44 db), Aqueon MiniBow 5 (46 db, loudest). The Aqueon's hang-on-back was noticeably the loudest at night.
6-month fish mortality (10 fish stocked per system): Fluval Flex (0), Fluval Spec V (0), Marineland (1), Tetra (2), Aqueon (3). Bigger volumes are more forgiving of beginner errors.
