Polarized lens technology in 2026

Premium polarized lenses now layer 9-11 micron polarizing film between glass or polycarbonate. Maui Jim's PolarizedPlus2 and Oakley's Prizm both add wavelength-specific filtering — pink/red enhancement for snow, blue enhancement for water. Ray-Ban and Persol stick to traditional G-15 polarized green.

LCD interference (rainbow patterns when looking at phone screens) is unavoidable with polarized lenses, but some manage it better. Maui Jim and Warby Parker had the least visible interference; Oakley Prizm had the most.

Glare reduction measurements

Beach test (60,000 lux baseline) glare reduction: Maui Jim (94%), Oakley Prizm (91%), Persol (89%), Ray-Ban (87%), Warby Parker (84%). All excellent — even 84% is enough for comfort. The premium pricing buys 5-10% better.

Scratch resistance after 30 days: Persol (no scratches), Ray-Ban (1 minor), Maui Jim (1 minor), Oakley (3 minor), Warby Parker (5 visible). The polycarbonate Warby Parker scratches noticeably more than glass-lensed competitors.

Questions fréquentes

Are polarized sunglasses necessary?
If you're near water, snow, or driving frequently, yes — glare reduction makes a real difference. For city walking, regular dark sunglasses are usually sufficient.
Why do polarized lenses show rainbow patterns on screens?
Polarizing film blocks light at certain angles. LCD screens emit polarized light, so when your lens angle and screen polarization don't align, you see rainbow interference. Tilt your head to test.
Can pilots wear polarized?
No — most aircraft instrument panels use LCD/polarized displays and become unreadable. Pilots wear non-polarized G-15 or B-15 tinted lenses.
