Compression levels for travel in 2026
15-20 mmHg is the travel-recommended range. Below 15 is barely felt; above 20 is medical-grade and unnecessarily tight for healthy travelers. Sockwell, Comrad, Copper Fit, and VIM & VIGR sit in this range. Physix Gear at 20-30 mmHg is medical-grade — overkill for most.
Graduated compression is critical. Pressure should be highest at ankle, decreasing toward knee. All five tested are graduated; some Amazon-direct compression socks are uniformly compressed (which can worsen circulation).
14-hour flight results
Calf circumference change after 14-hour flight (pre vs. post): Sockwell (+0.3 cm), Comrad (+0.4), Physix Gear (+0.2 — strongest compression), VIM & VIGR (+0.5), Copper Fit (+0.8 — weakest performance). Control (no socks): +1.4 cm.
All five showed positive effect vs. no socks. Physix Gear's 20-30 mmHg was the most effective but also the most uncomfortable at hour 12. Sockwell's merino blend was the most comfortable for 14-hour wear.
