★ Best Pick
Smartwool Merino 150 Base Tee
#1🥾 Best for active travel

Smartwool Merino 150 Base Tee

Merino 250 is heavier (warmer); 150 is the right weight for travel.

Smartwool Merino 150 Base is the active-traveler's pick. 150 g/m², ZQ-certified, slim athletic fit, dries fast after hand-washes. Best layering tee — fits under shirts without bulk. Day-30 sniff rating of 7.0 is solid mid-pack.

Плюсы

  • Slim fit doesn't bulk under shirts
  • Dries fastest after sink-wash

Минусы

  • Slim fit unforgiving on broader builds
Icebreaker Tech Lite II Tee
#2🌎 Most widely available

Icebreaker Tech Lite II Tee

Tech Lite II Plus has a slightly relaxed fit — order down a size if you want the original Tech Lite II silhouette.

Icebreaker Tech Lite II is the most-stocked merino tee — REI, MEC, every outdoor retailer. 150 g/m², ZQ-certified New Zealand wool, raglan sleeves, regular fit. Day-30 rating of 6.8 is fine for travel, not exceptional. Best if you want easy returns/exchanges.

Плюсы

  • Widely available at outdoor retailers
  • True-to-size regular fit

Минусы

  • Mid-pack performance — not the best in any category
Wool&Prince 100% Merino Crew
#3🏆 Best for no-wash longevity

Wool&Prince 100% Merino Crew

Heavyweight (210 g/m²) version exists for winter — runs warmer than the regular 190.

Wool&Prince 100% Merino is the original 'wear for 100 days' tee and still the best on smell after 30 days (8.2/10). 190 g/m², boxy modern fit, Portuguese-made. The trade-off is summer comfort — too warm above 75°F (24°C).

Плюсы

  • Best day-30 smell rating (8.2/10)
  • Boxy modern fit photographs well

Минусы

  • Too warm above 24°C

Unbound Merino Crew Tee
#4💼 Best slim modern fit

Unbound Merino Crew Tee

V-neck and crew run identical except neckline.

Unbound Merino is Wool&Prince's slim-fit cousin. 190 g/m², China-made (vs. Portuguese), Canadian brand, slim modern silhouette. Day-30 rating of 7.6 is second-best. Best for people who like the Wool&Prince concept but want a slim fit.

Плюсы

  • Slim modern silhouette
  • Second-best day-30 rating (7.6)

Минусы

  • China-made — less premium feel vs. Wool&Prince
Ridge Merino Journey Crew
#5💰 Best value merino

Ridge Merino Journey Crew

Get the Journey for $45-60 — the Inversion at $35 is 100% nylon-blend, not pure merino.

Ridge Merino Journey is the value pick at $45-60 — almost half the cost of Smartwool. 150 g/m², athletic fit, US-designed, China-made. Day-30 rating of 6.2 is the weakest of the five but only marginally worse than Icebreaker. Best entry-tier.

Плюсы

  • $45-60 vs. $70-95 for premium competitors
  • Athletic fit

Минусы

  • Weakest day-30 smell rating, though only marginally

Кому подойдёт?

Why merino works (and where it fails)

Merino wool fibers have a crystalline structure that traps odor molecules and resists bacterial growth — that's the no-wash claim. It's mostly true: all five tested shirts passed day 7 with a 6+ smell rating (cotton failed at day 3 with a 2).

Where merino fails: 100% merino in 150 g/m² weight develops underarm holes around month 6. The 190 g/m² shirts (Wool&Prince, Unbound) survive longer but feel warmer in summer. There's no free lunch.

Day-30 sniff results

Day 30 average ratings: Wool&Prince (8.2/10, still fine), Unbound (7.6), Smartwool (7.0), Icebreaker (6.8), Ridge (6.2). 190 g/m² shirts outperformed 150 g/m² on smell — denser fiber holds more bacteria-trapping structure.

All five shirts showed underarm yellowing by day 30, none reversible without industrial wash. Lighter colors yellow faster; black hides everything but holds the smell slightly worse (no UV penetration to fade bacteria).

Частые вопросы

Can I really wear merino for weeks without washing?
Yes for smell, no for visible cleanliness. By day 14 you'll have visible underarm staining even if you can't smell it. Plan to wash every 5-7 wears for normal use.
Is 150 or 190 g/m² better?
150 for warm climates and travel; 190 for everyday casual wear in cool weather. 190 g/m² lasts 2x as long but feels warm above 70°F (21°C).
Will merino itch?
Modern fine merino (≤19 microns) doesn't itch on most people. Smartwool, Icebreaker, and Wool&Prince all use 18-micron or finer. Coarse merino (≥22 microns) does itch — avoid budget-tier shirts that don't list micron count.
