The Mackintosh Dunoon is the only trench in this test that's actually waterproof. Bonded cotton with hand-glued seams (a technique invented by Charles Macintosh in 1823 and unchanged at the Cumbernauld factory). It rustles when you walk and feels stiffer than the Burberry. It is, however, the only one we'd wear through a 30-minute downpour with full confidence the inside would stay dry. Buy this for utility, the Burberry for heritage.

The Burberry and Mackintosh are the only two that are genuinely waterproof. Burberry's cotton gabardine sheds water through density (a tighter weave + DWR finish); Mackintosh's bonded cotton is hand-glued and sealed. Both kept us bone dry through 30-minute downpours.
The Everlane and Banana Republic are 'water-resistant' — fine for drizzle, soaked through after 20 minutes of heavy rain. Both required a second DWR spray at day 45 to maintain any beading at all.
The Uniqlo Blocktech is the surprise: a fully-taped three-layer technical fabric (the same Blocktech tech in their parkas). It outperformed everything except the Mackintosh for waterproofing, at $130. It just doesn't look like a heritage trench.
Construction details that matter at year 5
Buttons: only the Burberry and Mackintosh have horn buttons sewn through with reinforced backing thread. The Banana Republic lost a cuff button at week 6. The Uniqlo and Everlane both use plastic buttons with single-thread attachment — replaceable, but a sign of where corners were cut.
Belt loops: the Burberry has bartacked belt loops that handled daily belt tightening without fraying. Everlane's belt loops showed thread pulling at the corners by week 8 of daily wear.
Lining: the Burberry's signature check lining is dense twill that hides creasing. The Everlane's cotton-poly lining showed visible pilling at the underarms by week 10.
