The Eric Carle floor puzzle is a strip of giant pieces. Age labels are the seller's guidance. A child used to puzzles may be ready for more pieces, and a first-time puzzler may want fewer than the label suggests.
Wood, cardboard and format
The two Melissa & Doug sets are wooden: the chunky pieces stand up for play with a picture beneath, and the 4-in-1 comes in a wooden box with four compartments that doubles as a puzzle board. The Eric Carle floor puzzle is multicolored cardboard, two-sided, 120 by 5.75 inches. Ravensburger and Mudpuppy are standard jigsaws, both listed with FSC-certified materials.
Space matters too. The floor puzzle runs 10 feet, the Mudpuppy has a finished size of 23 by 16 inches, and the 4-in-1 box is described as portable for travel.
Which one to start with
For a toddler's first puzzle, the Melissa & Doug chunky set is the simplest and lowest-priced here. For a preschooler, the 4-in-1 set or the Eric Carle floor puzzle brings a theme and a bigger format. For a child who already finishes 48-piece puzzles, the Ravensburger 60-piece and the Mudpuppy 100-piece step up in size.
