Check your humidity before you check anything else

Evaporative cooling works by turning liquid water into vapour and taking the required latent heat out of the air. The energy has to come from somewhere, and it comes from the air temperature. That means the cooling capacity is set by how much more water the air can still absorb — the gap between the dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperature.

In a dry climate that gap is large and the effect is dramatic: air entering at 38°C and 15% relative humidity can leave the pad noticeably cooler. In a humid climate the gap is small, the water evaporates slowly, and what you get is a fan that also makes the room damp. No amount of spending on a better unit changes this — it is thermodynamics, not build quality.

The practical rule: below roughly 50% relative humidity these units earn their keep; above roughly 70% they do not, regardless of price. Check a local forecast for a typical hot day before buying, not an annual average, because the humidity that matters is the humidity when you need cooling.

Ventilation is a requirement, not an option
