C-shape vs. firm flat

C-shape (Boppy, Snuggle Me): a curved fiber-filled pillow that sits around the waist while the baby lies across it. Fiber fill is softer and compresses more than foam.

Firm flat with backrest (My Brest Friend): a flat foam cushion that wraps around the waist, with a backrest and an adjustable strap. The maker lists a 28–44 in waist range and says the range is not a guarantee of fit.

Leachco Podster: the CPSC warning

On January 20, 2022, the CPSC warned consumers to stop using the Leachco Podster, Podster Plush, Bummzie and Podster Playtime loungers immediately. The agency linked them to two infant deaths in which, after a change in position, the infant's nose and mouth were blocked. Leachco declined a voluntary recall.

The CPSC then brought an administrative case seeking notice to buyers and refunds. An administrative law judge ruled for Leachco in July 2024. In March 2026 the Commission vacated that decision and dismissed its own complaint, saying that, given the new federal safety standard for infant support cushions, continuing was no longer in the public interest. The order reaches no conclusion on the merits and says Leachco stopped making the products and last sold them in 2022.

A lounger does not replace a nursing pillow. A nursing pillow sits around the adult's waist during a feed; a lounger is a padded cushion the baby is placed in. The CPSC says loungers like these are not safe for sleep, and Leachco's own warnings say awake, supervised use only, not for sleep or use in a bed or crib. The Podster is not one of the products compared here; check cpsc.gov for the current status.

How to choose: shape, fit, cover care and use limits

Start with your body and seat. A C-shape pillow rests on your lap and works on a sofa or bed; a wraparound pillow with a strap like My Brest Friend is sized by waist range, so check the maker's range against your measurement.

Decide between fiber fill and foam. Fiber-filled pillows (Boppy, Snuggle Me) are softer and compress over time; foam (My Brest Friend) holds a flat shape. My Brest Friend's FAQ says new foam can have a slight smell and suggests airing it out of the cover for 12–24 hours.

Check cover care. Boppy and My Brest Friend covers are removable and machine-washable per the makers. Snuggle Me's current (v2) feeding pillow is itself machine-washable, and its organic cotton slipcover is sold separately and does not fit the previous version.

Read the use limits. Boppy says not to let a baby sleep on its nursing pillow or lie face down on it, and not to use it in or near a crib, bassinet or play yard. The CPSC's safe-sleep guidance is a firm, flat sleep surface such as a crib or bassinet, baby on the back, with nothing else in the sleep space. If the baby falls asleep or you feel drowsy, Boppy says to move the baby to a crib or bassinet.

Who may not need one: parents who are comfortable using regular pillows, or who mostly bottle-feed in a supported chair, may not need a dedicated nursing pillow. If you have pain or latch problems, a lactation consultant or your healthcare provider is a better first step than a product.
