Mineral vs. Chemical Sunscreen for Kids
Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide as active ingredients that sit on top of the skin and physically scatter UV rays. Chemical sunscreens use organic compounds (avobenzone, oxybenzone, homosalate) that absorb UV and release it as heat. The FDA has classified zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective (GRASE) for use in sunscreen. It has not yet issued the same classification for the organic chemical filters.
For children under 6 months, the AAP recommends avoiding sun exposure directly rather than applying sunscreen; sunscreen can be applied to small sun-exposed areas as a last resort. For children 6 months and older, SPF 15–50 mineral sunscreen is appropriate with broad-spectrum labeling. For infants and toddlers specifically, zinc oxide-only formulas avoid the titanium dioxide sensitivity some infants show.
White cast is the practical limitation of mineral sunscreens, particularly on medium to deep skin tones. Zinc oxide particles scatter visible light as well as UV, creating a visible whitish film. Formulas that use micronized or nano zinc oxide particles reduce white cast significantly but raise separate questions about nanoparticle absorption that regulators haven't fully resolved. Tinted mineral formulas use iron oxides to offset the white cast and provide some visible light protection.
Water Resistance: What the Labels Actually Mean
FDA regulations allow two water resistance claims: '40-minute' and '80-minute' water resistance. These indicate the SPF protection measured after the labeled amount of time in water — not that the sunscreen stays on indefinitely. After 40 or 80 minutes in water, mineral sunscreen protection degrades and reapplication is required. There is no such thing as a waterproof sunscreen.
For beach and pool use, set a timer. Eighty-minute water resistance means reapply after 80 minutes in the water, or sooner if toweling off vigorously (toweling removes sunscreen). Apply 15–30 minutes before sun exposure to allow the formula to settle into the skin, then reapply every 2 hours or after water exposure. The second application is where many parents fail — the initial apply-and-forget behavior accounts for most sunscreen inadequacy.
