Best Drones for Beginners 2026: 5 Picks Under and Over 250 g

The first question for a beginner drone is not the camera. It is weight, because weight decides whether you have to register the drone, and in the US after December 2025 it is also worth checking whether the model you want can still be bought.

Quick answer

The DJI Mini 4K at $299 on Amazon US is the one to buy for most beginners: under 249 g, a 3-axis gimbal and 31 minutes per battery. The DJI Neo is the smallest at 135 g, with full propeller guards and palm takeoff. The Potensic Atom 2 Fly More Combo at $539.99 is the pick if you want a non-DJI drone with three batteries and a screen controller. The DJI Mini 5 Pro has a 1-inch 50 MP sensor, but it was never officially launched in the US and we could not see a price on Amazon. The HoverAir X1 at $269 flies itself and follows you without a controller.

📋

We did not fly these drones ourselves. Flight feel, image quality and how a drone copes with wind take real flying in varied conditions, and we did not do that. What we did instead: took weights, flight times and camera specifications from DJI's specification pages and from the Amazon US listings, checked Amazon US prices and stock on October 6, 2026, and read the FCC Covered List coverage. Some Amazon pages would not load for us; where that happened we say the price or detail is not confirmed.

★ Best Pick

🏆 Best overall: The Mini 4K is DJI's entry-level folding drone at $299 on Amazon US, in stock when we checked on October 6, 2026. The listing gives a weight under 249 g, a 3-axis gimbal, 4K video, 10 km video transmission, 31 minutes per battery, Level 5 (38 km/h) wind resistance, GPS return to home and QuickShots.

4📷 Best cameraDJI Mini 5 Pro

DJI Mini 5 Pro

Sold on Amazon US by resellers. Check seller and warranty.

The Mini 5 Pro has the strongest camera here: DJI lists a 1-inch, 50 MP sensor, 4K up to 120fps, a 3-axis gimbal, omnidirectional vision with forward LiDAR, 36 minutes per battery (52 with the Plus battery) and 20 km transmission (FCC). DJI did not release it officially in the US. Amazon US carries reseller listings, but none showed a price when we checked, and warranty support through resellers may be limited. At 249.9 g ±4 g it may need FAA registration.

Pros

  • ✓1-inch 50 MP sensor
  • ✓Omnidirectional obstacle sensing
  • ✓36 min per battery

5🎥 Best hands-freeHoverAir X1 Self-Flying Camera

HoverAir X1 Self-Flying Camera

Self-flying camera. No controller needed.

The HoverAir X1 is a self-flying camera rather than a drone you steer. The Amazon US listings describe palm takeoff, a follow-me mode and HDR video, with no controller needed. We saw it at $269 on Amazon US. We could not load the full listing or the maker's page, so its weight, flight time and video resolution are not confirmed here. It suits vlogging and filming yourself more than learning to fly.

Pros

  • ✓Flies itself and follows you
  • ✓Palm takeoff
  • ✓$269

Cons

  • ✗Specifications not confirmed
  • ✗Not for learning manual flying

Weight decides the paperwork

In the US, the FAA says recreational flyers must register a drone that weighs 250 grams (0.55 lb) or more (faa.gov, Recreational Flyers). Below that, a recreational flyer does not register the drone, though you still take the free TRUST safety test and follow the recreational rules. Commercial use is different and needs registration at any weight.

The DJI Mini 4K and the Potensic Atom 2 are both listed as under 249 g. DJI lists the Mini 5 Pro at 249.9 g and notes that actual weight can vary by about 4 g, and its larger Plus battery pushes it over. If you want to stay clear of registration, do not count on the Mini 5 Pro being under the line.

Japan is stricter. Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism says drones of 100 g or more must be registered before they fly, and fall under the Civil Aeronautics Act permission rules (mlit.go.jp, drone portal). Every drone on this page weighs more than 100 g or does not publish a weight below it, so in Japan all of them need registration.

Can you still buy a DJI drone in the US?

Yes, with limits. On December 23, 2025 the FCC added foreign-made drones and certain drone components to its Covered List. The effect is that new models that did not already have FCC equipment authorization cannot get it, and so cannot be imported or sold. Models authorized before that date are not banned and can still be sold and flown (UAV Coach, The DJI Ban, updated for 2026).

The rule is not DJI-only. It covers foreign-made drones in general, so a Potensic or HoverAir model launched after the cutoff is in the same position as a new DJI one. The five drones here were all on sale before December 2025.

What it means in practice: the DJI Mini 4K was in stock on Amazon US on October 6, 2026, sold by a third-party seller and shipped by Amazon. The DJI Mini 5 Pro was never officially released in the US; Amazon US shows several Mini 5 Pro listings from resellers, but none showed a price when we checked. Reseller units can come with weaker warranty and repair support, so read the seller details before you buy.

One more catch for Android users: the Mini 4K listing notes that DJI Fly, the app DJI drones use, has been removed from Google Play and has to be downloaded from DJI's website.

Camera, gimbal and flight time

A 3-axis mechanical gimbal is what keeps video level and smooth when the drone tilts in the wind. The DJI Mini 4K, Potensic Atom 2 and DJI Mini 5 Pro all have one. The DJI Neo has a single-axis gimbal (tilt only) and relies on electronic stabilization for the rest, which is one reason it costs less.

Sensor size matters most in low light. DJI lists a 1-inch, 50 MP sensor on the Mini 5 Pro and a 1/2-inch sensor on the Neo. Potensic lists a 1/2-inch Sony sensor on the Atom 2 with 48 MP photos and 4K/30fps HDR video.

Flight time per battery ranges from 18 minutes on the Neo to 36 minutes on the Mini 5 Pro with its standard battery. A beginner spends a lot of the first flights hovering and practicing, so a second or third battery is worth more than most accessories.

How these picks were chosen

We looked for drones that a first-time pilot can fly with GPS hold or self-flying modes, that stay under or close to the 250 g line, and that we could confirm were sold on Amazon US. We dropped the Holy Stone HS720E because we could not find it on Amazon US, and the DJI Mini 4 Pro because the Mini 5 Pro now sits in that slot. Three of the five are DJI, which reflects how much of this market DJI holds and also how little the FCC rule has removed so far.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to register a drone under 250 g in the US?▼
Not for recreational flying, according to the FAA. You still need to pass the free TRUST test. Any commercial use needs registration regardless of weight.
Do I need to register my drone in Japan?▼
Yes if it weighs 100 g or more, which includes every drone here. Unregistered drones of 100 g or more may not be flown in Japan.
Is the DJI Mini 4K banned in the US?▼
No. It had FCC authorization before December 23, 2025, so it can still be sold and flown. It was in stock on Amazon US when we checked.
Why can't I find the DJI Mini 5 Pro in DJI's US store?▼
DJI did not release it officially in the US. It appears on Amazon US through resellers, which can mean higher prices and weaker warranty support.
Which beginner drone is safest to fly near people?▼
The DJI Neo, which DJI sells with full propeller guards and which weighs 135 g. Any drone still needs space and care; check local rules on flying over people.
How many batteries should a beginner buy?▼
Two or three. At 18 to 36 minutes per battery, one charge goes quickly when you are practicing. Fly More bundles usually cost less than buying batteries separately.
Can I fly a drone without a controller?▼
The DJI Neo and HoverAir X1 can take off from your palm and fly preset shots without one. For learning to fly manually, a controller is still the better tool.
