Best Ukulele 2026: 5 Soprano, Concert and Tenor Picks

WriterPickly Editorial

Updated 2026-10-05

SourcedLast reviewed 2026-10-05

A ukulele is one of the easiest instruments to start on: four nylon strings and a small body. The first decision is size, because soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles differ in fret spacing and in how full they sound.

Quick answer

The Kala KA-C concert ukulele at $99 is the one to buy for most adults: a 14.875-inch scale gives fingers more room than a soprano. The Kala KA-15S soprano at $69 is the classic small starter. The Makala MK-S at $65 is the lowest-priced pick. The Enya Nova U Pro is a tenor made of carbon fiber composite with a built-in pickup, suited to travel and outdoor use. The Donner DUC-1 concert kit at $99.99 includes a bag, strap and tuner.

📋

We did not run our own testing on these ukuleles. Judging tone and playability means playing each one, and individual instruments at this price vary. What we did instead: took sizes, scale lengths, woods and strings from each manufacturer's product pages, checked prices on the makers' own stores on October 4, 2026, and read owner reviews in volume. We saw two prices for the Enya Nova U Pro on Enya's store, $239.99 and $249.99, and could not load the page to settle it, so we do not quote one.

Soprano, concert or tenor

Soprano is the smallest standard size and has the bright, light sound most people associate with the ukulele. The frets are close together, which suits children and small hands. Kala lists a 13.625-inch scale on the KA-15S and 13.5 inches on the Makala MK-S, both with 12 frets.

Concert is one size up. Kala lists a 14.875-inch scale and 18 frets on the KA-C, with an overall length of 24.125 inches. The extra room makes chord shapes easier for adult fingers and the larger body sounds fuller.

Tenor is larger again, with more volume and sustain. It is the size many performers use. All three sizes use the same G-C-E-A tuning, so what you learn on one transfers to the others.

Wood, carbon composite and strings

Mahogany is the standard wood for entry-level ukuleles and gives a warm, even tone. Kala lists mahogany for the top, back, sides and neck on the KA-C, KA-15S and MK-S, with a rosewood fingerboard. The pages we read do not say whether the wood is solid or laminate; at these prices assume laminate.

Wood reacts to humidity and heat. A ukulele left in a hot car or a dry room can crack or warp. The Enya Nova U Pro is made of carbon fiber and polycarbonate for the top, back, sides, neck and fretboard, which makes it a safer choice for travel, camping and the beach.

Strings change the sound more than most beginners expect. Kala fits Aquila Super Nylgut strings, a common upgrade on other brands. Enya fits D'Addario EJ87T strings. New strings stretch and go out of tune for the first week; that is normal.

What comes in the box

A clip-on tuner is the one accessory every beginner needs, and a gig bag protects the instrument. The Donner DUC-1 kit includes a gig bag, strap, tuner, picks, a cleaning cloth and online lessons. The Kala and Makala models listed here are the instrument alone; Kala sells a Makala Soprano Pack separately.

The Nova U Pro has Enya's AcousticPlus pickup built in, so it can plug into an amplifier. Enya lists its weight at 2.25 lb, heavier than a typical wooden ukulele.

One of Donner's own stores showed the DUC-1 as sold out when we checked. Check availability on the listing.

How these picks were chosen

We chose ukuleles with published specifications across the three common sizes. Three of the five come from Kala and its Makala line, which reflects how much of the entry-level market Kala covers and also the limits of what we could verify. Lanikai, Cordoba, Flight and Luna make good beginner ukuleles too. They are not covered here, and that is a limit of this page.

Frequently asked questions

Which ukulele size is best for a beginner?▼
Concert suits most adults. Soprano suits children and anyone who wants the smallest, brightest instrument.
Is ukulele easier than guitar?▼
Yes for most people. It has four nylon strings, a short neck and simple chord shapes.
How much should I spend on a first ukulele?▼
About $65 to $100 buys a playable instrument from an established maker. Very cheap toy ukuleles often will not stay in tune.
Why does my new ukulele keep going out of tune?▼
New nylon strings stretch. Retune often for the first week and they will settle.
Do I need a pick?▼
No. Ukuleles are usually strummed with the fingers or thumb. Felt picks exist if you prefer one.
Is a carbon composite ukulele worth it?▼
If you travel or play outdoors, yes. It resists humidity and heat. For playing at home, wood costs less.
Can a child use a concert ukulele?▼
An older child can. For children under about eight a soprano is easier to hold.
