Best Sewing Machines for Beginners 2026: 5 Picks from $120
WriterPickly Editorial
Updated 2026-10-07
A first sewing machine has to do three things well: a straight stitch, a zigzag and a buttonhole. Everything past that is a choice between a mechanical dial machine and a computerized one, and between a light frame and a heavy one.
Quick answer
The Brother XM2701 at $149.99 is the one to buy for most beginners: 27 stitches, a one-step buttonhole and an automatic needle threader. The Singer M1500 at $119.99 is the lowest-priced pick, with 6 built-in stitches and a 4-step buttonhole. The Singer Heavy Duty 4423 at $229.99 has a metal frame and sews up to 1,100 stitches per minute for denim and canvas. The Brother CS7000X at $279.99 is computerized, with 70 stitches, an LCD and a wide table for quilting. The Janome 2212 at $269 is a plain 12-stitch mechanical machine from a brand sold mainly through dealers.
We did not run our own testing on these machines. Judging stitch quality and how a machine handles thick seams means sewing on each one. What we did instead: took stitch counts, buttonhole types, speeds, weights and included accessories from the manufacturers' product pages, checked prices on the makers' own US stores on October 6, 2026, and read owner reviews in volume. Store prices for sewing machines change often, and Singer showed its machines below list price when we checked.
🏆 Best overall: The XM2701 is a mechanical machine at $149.99 on Brother's US store. Brother lists 27 built-in stitches, a one-step auto-size buttonhole, an automatic needle threader, a jam-resistant top drop-in bobbin, an LED work light and 800 stitches per minute.

Janome lists 12 stitches, a 4-step buttonhole, a 4 mm maximum stitch length, a 5 mm maximum zigzag width, a free arm and drop feed for free-motion work. The page states it has no needle threader, and the buttonhole is 4-step, so it asks more of a beginner than the Brother XM2701 at a higher price.

- ✓Free arm and drop feed
- ✓Simple 12-stitch dial
- ✓Sold through Janome dealers

Mechanical or computerized
A mechanical machine picks stitches with a dial. The Singer M1500, Brother XM2701, Singer Heavy Duty 4423 and Janome 2212 work this way. There are fewer settings to learn, and nothing to go wrong in a screen.
A computerized machine like the Brother CS7000X selects stitches with buttons and shows them on an LCD. Brother lists 70 built-in stitches and seven one-step buttonhole styles. For someone who mostly hems trousers and repairs clothes, that is more than needed; for quilting and decorative work it is useful.
| Machine | Type | Built-in stitches | Price seen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brother XM2701 | Mechanical | 27 | $149.99 |
| Singer M1500 | Mechanical | 6 (57 applications) | $119.99 |
| Singer Heavy Duty 4423 | Mechanical, metal frame | 23 (97 applications) | $229.99 |
| Brother CS7000X | Computerized | 70 | $279.99 |
| Janome 2212 | Mechanical | 12 | $269 |
Singer counts stitch applications as well as stitches. The 57 and 97 figures include variations of the built-in stitches, so compare the built-in number across brands.
Buttonholes and needle threading
A one-step buttonhole sews the whole buttonhole in one pass, sized from the button placed in the foot. The Brother XM2701, Brother CS7000X and Singer Heavy Duty 4423 have one. A 4-step buttonhole, on the Singer M1500 and Janome 2212, means turning the dial four times per buttonhole. It works, but it takes practice to make every buttonhole on a shirt the same.
Threading the needle is where many beginners lose patience. Brother lists an automatic needle threader on the XM2701 and CS7000X, and Singer lists a built-in threader on the 4423. Janome's page for the 2212 says it has none, and Singer's M1500 page does not list one.
Thick fabric, speed and weight
Singer says the Heavy Duty 4423 motor is 60% stronger than a standard sewing machine motor, with a heavy-duty metal frame, a stainless steel bedplate and a top speed of 1,100 stitches per minute. At 14.6 lb it is the heaviest machine here, which keeps it from moving on the table but makes it less pleasant to carry.
Brother lists 800 stitches per minute for the XM2701 and 750 for the CS7000X. The Singer M1500 weighs 10 lb and the CS7000X 10.5 lb, light enough to put away after each use. Any of these can sew denim hems at a slow speed with the right needle, but layered seams on jeans and canvas bags are where the 4423 is aimed.
How these picks were chosen
We chose machines that are widely sold to beginners and have published specifications. Four of the five come from Brother and Singer, which reflects how much of the entry-level market those two brands cover. The Juki HZL-353ZR and Singer's M3220 are also reasonable beginner choices; they are not covered here, and that is a limit of this page.
